Mac ↔ Windows

Share files between Mac and Windows over Wi-Fi

Different computers. One easy connection.

Dropair connects two browsers on the same local network, so you can send documents, photos or a folder between a Mac and Windows PC without uploading file contents to a cloud service. Pair the computers, select what to send, then accept and save it on the other computer.

What you need

A Mac and Windows PC with up-to-date browsers, connected to the same local network. Wi-Fi and Ethernet can work together when the router allows devices to communicate. You need internet access to open Dropair and establish the pairing connection.

Pair once, send in either direction

  1. Open Dropair on both computers

Visit dropair.online. On one computer, select Pair a device → Copy pairing link.

  2. Join the same private space

Open that complete link on your other computer. You can also paste it into Have a pairing link? in that computer’s pairing panel and choose Join. Keep the link private and wait for the other computer to appear as connected.

  3. Choose files or a folder

Select Choose files for individual items. On a desktop browser with folder selection, use Choose folder for a directory. Dropair packages a folder into a ZIP archive and preserves its nested paths.

  4. Send to the other computer

Select its entry under Your devices. On the receiving computer, accept the incoming file. Keep both tabs open until the transfer finishes.

  5. Save, then open

Choose Save beside the received item to export it through the browser. If you sent a folder, extract the ZIP with your file manager. Dropair does not automatically extract received archives.

Things to know across platforms

Will a Mac file open on Windows?

Transferring a file does not convert its format. The receiving computer needs software that supports it. A Mac-specific app or document may need to be exported to a compatible format before sending.

Can one computer use Ethernet?

Yes, provided it belongs to the same local network and the router permits connections to the Wi-Fi device. Guest Wi-Fi and separate network segments can block this.

What happens to folders and permissions?

Dropair sends a ZIP containing the folder’s files and paths. It is not a full system-backup tool and does not promise to preserve platform-specific permissions or every type of filesystem metadata.

Can I close the laptop while it sends?

Keep both computers awake and both Dropair pages open. Closing a browser, sleeping a computer or changing networks can interrupt the transfer. Retry if the session is lost.

Does the recipient need an account?

No account is required. They do need the private pairing invitation, a compatible browser and a direct local connection. Incoming files require acceptance.

If the computers do not appear

Check they joined the same pairing link, then try a small file on a trusted home network. Do not disable a managed firewall just to transfer a file; ask the network administrator whether local peer connections are allowed. See the connection checklist for the next checks.

Ready when you are.
